Herri Argia is a photographic project developed by Gartzen over five years around herri kirolak, the traditional Basque rural sports. Between 2017 and 2022 he created more than 8,000 images taken both in competitions and in portrait sessions with the athletes, from which a selection shaped this exhibition, first inaugurated in 2023 at the Casa de Cultura in Igorre, his hometown.
The exhibition combines two perspectives: on the one hand, scenes captured during competitions, the result of discreet observation of movement and intensity; on the other, portraits produced in specific sessions, where traditional tools —axes, stones, logs, ropes— acquire an aesthetic and symbolic value alongside the bodies that work them.
Herri Argia builds a bridge between past and present: between the original function of these implements in agricultural life and their transformation into instruments of sport. Yet the essential focus remains the people: their strength, their dignity, and the way they keep a tradition alive as it evolves with new generations, women, and athletes from diverse backgrounds.
The project was enriched by the contributions of others: the texts of writer and researcher Astrid Villanueva Zaldo, which added context and reflection, and the verses of Ibon Iza, which engaged with the images and expanded their poetic resonance.
After its first presentation in Igorre, the exhibition is available to travel to other cultural spaces interested in showcasing Basque culture through a contemporary, inclusive, and human-centered lens.

Herri Argia bost urtez garatutako proiektu fotografikoa da, Gartzeneren eskutik, herri kirolak ardatz hartuta. 2017 eta 2022 artean, 8.000 irudi baino gehiago sortu zituen, lehiaketetan eta kirolariekin egindako saioetan jasotakoak. Horietatik hautatutako irudiek osatu zuten erakusketa hau, 2023an inauguratu zena Igorren, bere jaioterriko Kultur Etxean.
Erakusketak bi begirada uztartzen ditu: alde batetik, lehiaketetan bertan hartutako eszenak, mugimendua eta intentsitatea islatzen dituztenak; eta bestetik, saio berezietan sortutako erretratuak, non tresna tradizionalek —aizkorak, harriak, enborrak, sokak— balio estetiko eta sinbolikoa hartzen duten haiekin aritzen diren gorputzekin batera.
Herri Argiak zubi bat eraikitzen du iraganaren eta orainaren artean: lanabes hauen jatorrizko nekazaritza-funtzioaren eta kirol tresna gisa duten egungo erabileraren artean. Funtsezkoa, hala ere, pertsonak dira: haien indarra, duintasuna eta belaunaldi berriekin, emakumeekin eta jatorri desberdinetako kirolariekin batera bizirik mantentzen duten tradizioa.
Proiektua beste ekarpen batzuekin aberastu zen: Astrid Villanueva Zaldo idazle eta ikertzailearen testuek testuingurua eta gogoeta gehitu zuten, eta Ibon Izaren bertsoek irudiekin elkarrizketa sortu eta haien oihartzun poetikoa handitu zuten.
Igorren lehen aurkezpenaren ostean, erakusketa beste kultur guneetara eramateko prest dago, euskal kultura ikuspegi garaikide, inklusibo eta pertsonetan zentratutik erakusteko interesa dutenetara.

Herri Argia es un proyecto fotográfico desarrollado por Gartzen a lo largo de cinco años en torno a los 'Herri Kirolak', los deportes rurales vascos. Entre 2017 y 2022 realizó más de 8.000 imágenes tomadas en competiciones y en sesiones fotográficas con sus protagonistas, de las que seleccionó una parte para esta exposición, inaugurada en 2023 en la Casa de Cultura de Igorre, su localidad natal.
La muestra combina dos miradas: por un lado, escenas captadas en plena competición, fruto de una observación discreta del movimiento y la intensidad; por otro, retratos creados en sesiones específicas, donde las herramientas tradicionales —hachas, piedras, troncos, cuerdas— adquieren un valor estético y simbólico junto a los cuerpos que las trabajan.
Herri Argia tiende un puente entre pasado y presente: entre la función original de estos utensilios en la vida agrícola y su transformación en disciplinas deportivas. Lo esencial, sin embargo, son siempre las personas: su fuerza, su dignidad y su forma de mantener viva una tradición que evoluciona con nuevas generaciones, mujeres y deportistas de distintos orígenes.
El proyecto se enriqueció con la colaboración de otras miradas: los textos de la escritora e investigadora Astrid Villanueva Zaldo, que aportaron contexto y reflexión, y los versos de Ibon Iza, que dialogaron con las imágenes y ampliaron su resonancia poética.
Tras su primera presentación en Igorre, la exposición está disponible para itinerar en otros espacios culturales interesados en mostrar la cultura vasca desde una óptica contemporánea, inclusiva y centrada en las personas.
